This introductory course investigates the visual elements and principles of art through lectures, reading, films and hands-on experience. It also examines, in the same manner, historical styles and themes in art as well as materials and techniques. Pass/No Pass/Letter Grade Option.

An introduction to the visual elements, visual media and history. Cost of Museum visit and materials will not exceed $20.00. Pass/No Pass/Letter Grade Option.

Upon entering this course, the student needs to be able to:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Define basic art terms and processes.
2. Identify major historical styles of art, artists, and artworks.
3. Analyze an artwork in terms of formalism and content.
4. Demonstrate, in writing and in art projects, the workings of basic art materials and processes: drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and painting.
5. Explain historical or thematic connections between the major art forms and styles.
6. Understand the visual cultures of both Western and world art.
7. Connect issues discussed in art to greater cultural themes.
8. Critically examine the visual world outside of the classroom.
